BACTERIAL RESISTANCE FACTS

There is clear scientific evidence that antibacterial products effectively reduce or eliminate bacteria that can lead to skin infections, intestinal illnesses or other commonly transmitted diseases. There is also clear scientific evidence that consumers and health care workers can use these products with complete confidence in their safety.

Past laboratory studies have speculated about a link between antimicrobial wash products and bacterial resistance, however, recent scientific studies have found no link between the real-world use of antibacterial products and bacterial resistance. The international scientific community agrees that the main culprit for the rising incidence of bacterial resistance is the misuse and overuse of antibiotic drugs.

On January 27, 1997, a joint meeting of two FDA Advisory Committees agreed that there is no evidence indicating that topical antimicrobial wash products contribute to antimicrobial resistance. Numerous research studies have come to the same conclusion:

"Data generated from this applied home environment study showed a lack of antibiotic and antibacterial agent cross-resistance in target bacteria from the homes of antibacterial product users and nonusers across different geographical locations."

(Cole, et al. (2003); Investigation of antibiotic and antibacterial agent cross-resistance in target bacteria from homes of antibacterial product users and non users; Journal of Applied Microbiology).

"The results from our study do not implicate use of antibacterial cleaning and hygiene products as an influential factor in carriage of antimicrobial drug–resistant bacteria on the hands of household members."

(Aeillo, et al. (2005); Antibacterial cleaning products and bacterial resistance; Emerging Infectious Diseases)

"We conclude therefore that the emergence of antibiotic resistance through TCS [triclosan] use in the kitchen is highly improbable."

(McBain, et al. (2003); Exposure of sink drain microcosms to triclosan: Population dynamics and antimicrobial susceptibility. Applied Environmental Microbiology)
